What stands out in the story of Cornelius and Peter is that God draws Peter beyond what the Bible literally says to the heart of the Gospel. Read literally the Hebrew Scriptures which Christians now call “the Old Testament” but were the only Bible Peter had make it clear people like Cornelius are outside the covenant, not including in the life of faith, and must go through complicated ritual and surgery to join.
Yet the heart of the Gospel is that God tears down every wall of division, drawing all people to God’s self, so we must draw all people together as one. God shows that love, not rules, are most important.
How have you had to learn to put aside treasured rules to better live out the principle of love?
